CANADIAN FOOD AND WINE LABELS

As Canada Day approaches, the Ontario Viniculture Association commends Prime Minister Harper for the initiative to label Canadian Agricultural produce properly. We consider wine to be the highest expression of Canadian Cuisine. All foods using 100% Canadian sourced raw materiel should use labeling which identifies them as Canadian. The use of Canadian political or geographical names should be restricted to such products. The consumer should have absolute trust in all food labeling, and enjoy the right of full and accurate information on all Canadian food labels.

Sadly this situation does not apply to Canadian wine. Many popular “Domestic” grape wines with “Canada” on the label may contain more imported than Canadian wine. Such products should be distinguished by having labels conforming to Agricultural Rules of Origin, as would strawberries or beef. The economic benefit of supporting local agriculture and winemaking - by empowering consumers to make informed decisions - would be significant.
